The Self-help Group for Cerebral Palsy (SGCP) Nepal is a non-governmental and non-profit organization established in October 1986 by a team of medical professionals, university teachers, parents of children with disabilities, and social workers. It is registered with the Government of Nepal (Reg. No. 362/050/51), affiliated with the Social Welfare Council (Reg. No. 1734), registered under PAN No. 302298243, and is an associated organization of the International Cerebral Palsy Society, UK. SGCP Nepal's mission is to improve the quality of life of children and adults with cerebral palsy and neurological conditions by providing comprehensive support and services. It also aims to create the necessary social and physical support infrastructure, empowering individuals with cerebral palsy to lead independent and dignified lives while supporting their carers. SGCP runs several comprehensive programmes, mainly include Rehabilitation Centre (paramedical wing) provides specialist medical and therapeutic services for people with cerebral palsy and other neurological disorders. Special Education Programme (special school) gives academic, life-skills and vocational education to its children in specialist settings and where possible supports them through
mainstream education. Outreach/Home Visit Programme (community-based rehabilitation), Day Care Centers (cognitive and physical interventions to children at their community with involvement of parents), Residential Programme, Care for Carers; Carers to Carers Programme and support Technical Aids, enabling participation in daily living, education social, recreational and other activities.
Prof. Batuk Prasad Rajbhandari was the visionary Founder and President of the Self-help Group for Cerebral Palsy, Nepal (SGCP). A passionate advocate for children with disabilities, he dedicated his life to improving the lives of children with cerebral palsy and their families in Nepal.
Prof. Rajbhandari held a Master’s degree in Economics from Allahabad University and a Bachelor of Education from the Central Institute of Education, Delhi. He further pursued advanced studies at the University of Oregon and completed an Academic Administrative Internship at the University of New Hampshire, USA.
Throughout his professional career, he served in various academic and leadership roles, including Chairman of the Economics Instruction Committee at Tribhuvan University and Executive Director of the Nepal Disabled Association. His deep commitment to social service led him to engage with several organizations working for the welfare of children and people with disabilities.
In 1986, with a vision of creating a better future for children with cerebral palsy, Mr. Rajbhandari founded SGCP Nepal. Under his leadership, SGCP grew into the leading organization in Nepal offering rehabilitation, education, and community support services for individuals with cerebral palsy and neurological conditions.
Prof. Rajbhandari believed in empowering families and building inclusive communities. His work continues to inspire SGCP’s mission to this day — providing quality services, promoting rights, and fostering independence and dignity for all individuals with disabilities.
His legacy remains a guiding light for SGCP and for all those committed to creating a more just and inclusive society.
