Empowering Development through Comprehensive Care and Support Services

Day Care Center (DCC)
About

In 2009 SGCP launched a DCC programme, to provide day care services for groups of children/adults who are suffering from cp and neurological conditions. The DCCs run in collaboration with parents/cares and local organizations.  At the DCCs children are trained in Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as eating, washing, toilet-training and provided with basic education, where possible, including computer training. SGCP Rehab facilitators visit the DCCs on a regular basis to provide therapeutic services to the children and manage and train DCC staff and parents in rehabilitation interventions that can assist the children gain necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to become more independent in their life within the bounds of their physical and cognitive abilities. The provision of a DCC also provides parents of children with CP the opportunity to look for and engage in work, in the knowledge that their child is receiving appropriate and beneficial care while they are outside of the home.  Twenty-one DCCs are currently operational (some more are in the process) across the country benefiting over 300 children with cp and neurological problems, and their parents and cares. One disables friendly classroom was constructed in Bhaktapur in the land donated by parents and one in the process of construction in Nepalgunj with support of well-wishers in the Government school. With supplementary support in day meals at DCCs, over 235 children were benefitted and their health was remarkably improved. In the roll out of the DCC project, SGCP are trialing different organizational structures and models, depending on the level of involvement and commitment from parental groups, other community organizations and local NGOs.  SGCP’s financial obligations to individual DCC thus varies.  SGCP aims to ensure that DCCs are established in an appropriate operationally and financially sustainable way.  Once established individual DCCs are encouraged to fundraising to meet the running costs e.g., small donors could sponsor a child, buy a vehicle for transportation, pay for stationary, buy a certain piece of equipment, support for driver and facilitator, assistant etc.
